The Dwarves took to the mountains of the realm, creating massive underground cities that boggled the mind, however there is really only one city of note in Saphriel, the city of Thonduhm. Located on a large island in the mid northern parts of the land the dwarves built a massive kingdom where they sealed themselves inside the mountain of Thonduhm (named after their city) in their pursuit for riches. Their craftsmanship and mining methods are nearly unmatched by any current living race. They are rarely seen outside of their mountain homes typically keeping to themselves, however this did not stop them from trading with the other races quite often, especially the humans. They are a jolly sort as a whole, they typically love a hard days work and a strong drink. In fact the dwarves are quite famed for their brewing skills, as well as their ability to down endless amounts of alcohol.
When the war started the dwarves were the last to be driven out, their underground city was virtually impenetrable, and it took the combined efforts of the goblins, trolls, and orcs under the command of three cult leaders to break down the gates and take the city. Very few dwarves survived this attack and fled from their mountain home, nearly 85% of the city’s population was wiped out in the attack. Those who lived have now taken up residence in Barkamsted with the other refugees who have fled the war. The Dwarves resided within the city for many years until the war with the Pact finally came to a close. In recent events many of the dwarves have come to make peace with the goblins and working together they are slowly beginning to rebuild their lost city. However there is still much resentment and hostility held towards the goblins and the other Pact races by the dwarven people despite the recent treaty between the two groups.
Dwarves are short and powerful compared to humans, with their males reaching an approximate height of four feet four inches on average, while the Dwarven female commonly cease growth at approximately four feet on average. Males of the race tend to reach sexual maturity at an approximate 20 years old, while females develop slower, reaching sexual maturity at an approximate 30 years old. Males again develop faster than their female counterpart, reaching adulthood at an approximate 40 years old while females take upwards of 50 to 60 years before their bodies are completely developed. Both genders commonly expire at an approximate 180 years old.
Dwarves are short and burly when compared to humans, especially the male Dwarf’s body is bulky with dense muscles and thick bones. It is yet to be documented a male dwarf incapable of growing a beard, be it a full beard, moustache or some other variant of beard, a dwarf will grow one. The beginning of their beard’s growth is a signal that they are reaching sexual maturity, while the end of its growth signals their reach of adulthood. A Dwarven beard completely ceasegrowth at this point, unless cut, at which point it will grow to the same length as before and cease growth once again. Female Dwarves have not shown an increased tendency to grow beards; instead, their hair shows similar properties in that it ceases growth completely once they enter adulthood. Their hair is arguably the blandest of the three races in that it is rarely other colours than brown, black, white and rarely red. Their eyes most commonly brown, but blue is possible as well.
Outside of their beards, Dwarves possess unrivalled raw physical prowess and endurance compared to both humans and elves, possessing much denser muscle and bone structure. Due to their life far beneath the surface, their lungs have adjusted to the arguably worse air, meaning that their respiratory systems are far more efficient in supplying the average Dwarf with vital oxygen. Likewise their life far beneath the ground has granted them another great biological defence, this being an uncanny ability to filter blood-based poison through their system with relatively no effect. This ability has mostly been passed off, as the only poison a Dwarf typically ingests is the absurd beverages they produce. An approximate 25% of all Dwarves show any magical potential.
Additional notes: Dwarves would make excellent labours. Their physical strength and natural endurance make them better suited for the more dangerous work of mining and lumber jacking. It should be noted however, that a Dwarven warrior is nothing to scoff at.
Dwarves as a whole typically worship the god Kinos, father of the earth and the sea. However much unlike other races they do not gather to perform this worship. They simply pay homage and give thanks to him for the riches of the land that he provides them. In the center of their ruined capital city Thonduhm there is a great altar that was constructed years ago and dedicated to the god. The second most common religion worshiped by the dwarves is Uldir, much like the orcs do. Though this is mostly amongst the warriors of the dwarvish people.
